Talk:Help using perl

From PerlNet

Jump to: navigation, search

I'm a little cautious of PerlNet becoming a help portal. Perlmonks already does an excellent job of being able to provide help with many Perl problems, and also provides a huge repository of past information that can be searched. The everything2 engine used by Perlmonks is well suited for that purpose. MediaWiki doesn't work quite as well for question-and-answer, at least not without help.

Having said all that, I think we should try and consider individuals namespaces (eg, User:PJF) free for individuals to use as they see fit, within reason. I'm happy for a user to ask a question, link to their personal namespace that contains the problem, and for solutions and suggestions to be discussed there. The important point here is that it keeps clutter out of the main namespace, which I hope will contain well formed and structured content. Of course, if a particular question and answer is particularly enlightening, it should be moved into the main namespace (into a HowTo section or similar).

Questions need not be on the user's main page itself. It's always possible to create a subpage, such as User:PJF/Example. This is an effective way to keep questions separate from a user's home page.

I'm updating the text of the main article to reflect such ideas.
